Five Best Television Shows of the Year

Like music, 2022 was an outstanding year for new and continued TV series released throughout the year. From the record-breaking Wednesday to the most controversial series, Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, 2022 produced some of the best content in years.

The Flight Attendant

Season two of HBO’s American dark comedy drama thriller, The Flight Attendant, stars the incredibly dynamic Kaley Cuoco, as a flight attendant who gets involved in some serious shit with some seriously bad people. A struggling alcoholic, Cassie Bowden (Cuoco) recklessly drinks to cope during fights and has sex with random strangers throughout her travels across the world. In season one, Cassie wakes up from a brutal hangover in Bangkok with a passenger she fucked the night before. His throat is slashed, with blood splattered everywhere. Afraid to call the police, Cassie cleans up the crime scene. Then the fun begins, quickly developing into a wickedly funny, entertaining mystery thriller that isn’t afraid to cross the line. In season two, Cass confronts her drinking problem and failed relationships. The past creeps back into her life and she embarks on yet another wild journey running from dangerous criminals who want to kill her. Look out for Annie, Cassie’s best friend and punching bag throughout the show. She’s fiercely funny and their chemistry is perfect onscreen. Kaley Cuoco is one hell of an actress with perfect comedic timing; you literally can’t take your eyes off her.

Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story

As soon as word got out that Evan Peters, from the popular series American Horror Story was playing Jeffrey Dahmer for a brand new take on the psychopath, social media exploded with excitement and fear. Not only does Peters look and talk like Dahmer, but his eerie tone and his ability to become the monster who did terrible, unimaginable things to seventeen men, is one of the most terrifying performances I’ve ever witnessed. You literally feel as if you’re one of the victims trying to escape or living next door to him hearing the disturbing noises when he’s sawing and banging things. Niecy Nash plays Dahmers next door neighbor and delivers an astonishing performance constantly begging the police to believe her. The tension is real while watching this haunting masterpiece. You can’t take your eyes off it even though it’s sickening to witness what he did to those men. It’s become one of the most watched shows on Netflix and critics praise Peters performance acknowledging he will absolutely be nominated for awards this season.

F Boy Island

I’m sure just looking at the title of this show you’re wondering how in the hell could this be a top show of the year. Let me tell you, while most reality shows get a bad rep, even though everyone secretly binges various shows; F Boy Island takes dating to a raunchy, hilarious and entertaining ride that you’ll probably binge in one day. It’s on HBO Max, so no baby edited shit. They curse, have sex and live in paradise to find their true love. The twist has three women dating hunky, attractive men. They could win 100,000 bucks together if the man chooses to explore the relationship with the woman that chooses him, however the man who still proclaims to be an F boy can dump the girl he manipulated and take the entire prize for himself. Watch for Garrett Morosky in both seasons; a hunky womanizer who takes bro to the nth degree. His bromance with heartbreaker, gorgeous ladies man, Casey Johnson, is the best in years. Comedian Nikki Glaser hosts the entire two seasons and her alone is a reason to watch this beautiful disaster.

Yellowjackets

Yellowjackets is one of the most interesting and jaw-dropping shows to come around on Showtime since Dexter. A high school girls soccer team travels to Seattle for a national tournament in 1996. The plane crashes mid flight killing most of the passengers except for a small group of players and their coach. Each episode shows the survivors that made it through the grueling one year plus stranded in the woods. It also shows them in real time, as their young selves trying to escape the madness and danger haunting them. Juliette Lewis stars and Christina Ricci gives an odd, but brilliant performance as the trouble maker. When you find out what happened during that year in the woods and how it correlates to the women that survived it, you won’t believe your eyes.

Dead to Me

When ‘Dead to Me’ first premiered on Netflix in 2019, it garnered much deserved critical and commercial success. The dark comedy, starring the always talented Christina Applegate, finds an unlikely friendship with Linda Cardellini (Legally Blonde) while grieving the death of Jen’s (Applegate) husband. The show slowly progresses into a comedy murder mystery often satirizing the current criminal system and privileged upper white class stature.

Season three takes a turn to the more emotional and tearful side, but never seems to fail when delivering pure comedy gold. Applegate’s comedic timing is excellently executed showing that she’s still got the chops and just absolutely nails the leading woman role effortlessly. On November 15th, 2022, Christina Applegate arrived publicly (for the first time since announcing her diagnosis with MS) to her Hall of Fame Ceremony in Hollywood, where she spoke about family, her daughter and her journey as an actress. Her charisma, hilarious wit and touching speech brought tears to fans across the world. ‘Dead to Me’ and this final season could quite possibly be the last time she performs in a television or movie role. Nonetheless, Christina Applegate has been one of the funniest and down to earth actresses to grace the sometimes-corrupted, phony entertainment industry.

Her role as Jen Harding, especially in this final season, should go down as a performance of a lifetime. The way the show mirrors what these women are experiencing in real life and the raw emotions illustrated throughout ‘Dead to Me’ is the recipe for an almost near perfect show.
